Halloween Window,
1958, tempera paint
Each year just before Halloween,
the local mall asked teachers at our elementary school for artistic kids to paint a Halloween scene on store-front
windows. That year, when I was 12, I was one of the kids selected to paint a window in freezing cold weather
-- note hands in pockets (Dayton, Ohio, isn't known for balmy weather in
October). Even though my fingers
were nearly frozen while painting this, I still felt honored to be selected. My dad took this picture, which I had
completely forgotten about until he and mom sent me a bunch of my childhood photos in early 1990s. To me, this design
is not good, but it is amusing.
